Bear with me guys.. first time posting on the blog (this is Jess).. so here are my opinions of the local thrift stores.
Thrift stores are a great way to save money for your family's clothing and basic household needs. Why spend $40 on a dish set when you can spend $10?? All of the reviews are based on my opinion and experiences so that those of you who have never thrifted before know which places have what.
Most areas have local thrift stores (Goodwill, Salvation Army) that take donations for resale to raise money for the homeless or programs and such.. but did you know there are also church run thrift stores that may in fact be cheaper? Here in Siouxland, we have several thrifts that provide great items at wonderful prices...
The Bargain Center is located at 1001 W. 7th Street in Sioux City. The have clothes, shoes, books, dishes, small appliances, seasonal items, sports gear and even some furniture now and then. My favorite find at this store was about two years ago, when I came home with a pair of Juicy Couture velour pants for $1.25 (I am wearing them right now too haha). Prices have gone up, but I believe jeans are about $2.50 and there are so many high quality brands and they are hung by size pretty well. This store has very sweet retired church ladies running it.
The Gospel Mission store is at 215 6th street. This store has
70 cent clothing! Not everything is 70 cents, but about 80% of it is. I picked up some Old Navy jeans here for 70 cents one day.. they looked brand new. This store usually has tons of furniture at pretty decent prices. They have clothes, a kids toy room and tons of knick knacks too. This is probably my favorite local thrift because of the prom dresses I pick up for 70 cents now and then for random parties my friends and I have :P
The Salvation Army store located in the Transit Plaza is pretty neatly organized as far as the clothing racks go.. they go by color! Very friendly staff. My favorite find here was an angora sweater vest for $4.
Mission of the Messiah at 2803 Correctionville Rd sells your typical donations, but also has some
fair trade items like coffee and decor. They also have free coffee/tea and cookies for shoppers hehe
DAV thrift store supports disabled veterans.. they are located at 5129 Military Road and have a smaller sized store compared to the others above, but everything is arranged pretty well and the store is run by retirees. My BEST FIND EVER was here.. a pair of $222 lime green pants with the tags still on them... can't remember the brand right now, but they were from La Ventura.. my MIL loves em :)
Both Goodwill stores in town have been reorganized and are in great shape, but definitely not as low priced as any of the above stores. Still good to check them out for more selection though!
